Two of these washers form a pair. If the bolt becomes loose, the cam of one of the washers pushes up the cam of the other washer, and a force that tries to separate the washers is generated. However, because of the wedge effect, the washers will not separate more than screw pitch. Indication of the drawingThe wedge angle α is greater than the screw lead angle β.
